18-hour New York State Carry Concealed Pistol Course

Welcome to residents of Erie & Niagara Counties, age 21 and over, who are of good moral character and who declare that they do not intend to harm themselves or others. Students are expected to have a positive attitude and be respectful of all participants involved in the course. Students of all political views, races, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity are welcome. Harrassment of any kind will not be tolerated.

The 16-hour in-class session shall take place at The American Legion Post #830 at 2589 Youngstown Lockport Rd, Ransomville, NY 14131 on the weekend of May 3 & 4, 2025 from 9AM to 5 PM each day. Please bring lunch and snacks for break time if you wish. There is a microwave available for use.

The 2-hour live-fire range portion will be held on Saturday, May 17, pending student availability, at Defensor, INC, 3355 Niagara Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda, NY 14120

The total cost of the course is $340, which includes your own copy to keep of the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Handbook. A $40 deposit is required to hold your seat. The balance is due by the first day of class. Cash, personal check, or Zelle are accepted payment methods. Students will be asked to come to class prepared with their fingernails trimmed to fingertip length for the safe grip and operation of the firearms. Also, you will need to bring your own eye protection and ear protection. You may wish to bring a notebook and writing instruments for note taking.

There will be a multiple choice written exam at the end of each in-class session. A passing score is 80% correct. Answers will be reviewed and questions discussed. Certificates of completion (a prerequisite for the application for a New York State Pistol Permit) will be issued after the live-range portion of the event. A passing score on the shooting exam is awarded at a shooting length of 4 yards (16 feet), with a target size of 25 1/2" by 11", where 4 of the 5 bullets fired are present on the target, per Minimum Standards For New York State Concealed Carry Firearm Safety Training. If a student would like to recieve the additional Certification for the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Level 2, then 4 of 5 bullets shall be present on a target at 15 feet at a 4 inch circle. You may take the qualification as many times as needed to achieve the required score. This is intended to be a learing and supportive course where new shooters will recieve the encouragement and guidance needed. This will be a safe and achievable exam process, meant to promote student growth.
